The German Aerospace Center (DLR) puts the direct economic damage caused by unauthorized drone flights at German airports last year at at least 60 million euros, and including consequential costs at up to 160 million euros.
Key findings of the DLR report
The impacts of unauthorized drone flights ranged from delays and holding patterns to diversions and partial or complete shutdowns of operations. This is according to a release from the German Aerospace Center dated 8 June 2026, published by Deutschlandfunk. Florian Linke, acting director of the DLR Institute of Air Transport, said: „Unbefugte Drohnenflüge im Umfeld von Flughäfen können erhebliche wirtschaftliche Schäden verursachen und stellen zugleich eine Herausforderung für die Sicherheit und Resilienz des Flugbetriebs dar."
According to the German Aerospace Center, there were 116 relevant disruption incidents at 25 airports last year. In total, 226 drone events were reported to the Federal Aviation Office (LBA), the DLR said. Of these, 116 were relevant disruption incidents at a total of 25 commercial airports. The damage figure includes additional operating costs from delays, diversions, and cancellations, among other things.
