Drought puts Austrian sugar producers under pressure

The background to the strained situation is the lack of precipitation in Austria's most important beet-growing regions. Comparatively small beet cultivation areas, combined with longer dry phases, have noticeably reduced the harvest volume per hectare. Industry representatives report that beet farmers have had to expect considerable yield losses since spring 2025.

Climate and cultivation under pressure

According to Agrana, an aggravating factor was that harvest windows were in some cases significantly shortened by the weather. In Leopoldsdorf in the Marchfeld, one of the core regions of domestic beet cultivation, farmers sometimes had to improvise between lifting and delivering the clamps, according to the company. The Tulln sugar factory nevertheless operated around the clock for months in order to process the specified beet volume quickly.

Despite the additional effort, Agrana achieved the announced processing volume. According to group information, the registered beet volumes were fully taken over and processed into sugar, by-products and dried pulp within the campaign. Volume-related reductions compared to previous years remained moderate, as emerges from communications in connection with the AMA multiple applications.

The economic consequences of the drought are nevertheless noticeable. Agricultural areas that are usually irrigated during dry phases were not available in full this year. Industry observers point out that smaller processing batches increase the unit costs in sugar production. The cost-of-production pressure thus has a direct impact on the calculations of contract farmers.

Economic consequences for the industry

For the current 2026 season, there are so far no signs of any fundamental easing. Precipitation deficits from the late winter of 2025/2026 have further reduced soil water reserves in the classic beet regions. According to its own information, Agrana therefore expects another strained campaign, in which the beet cultivation area and weather conditions during the summer months remain decisive factors.

At the same time, the group sees its role as the most important domestic processor confirmed. With the Tulln sugar factory and the Leopoldsdorf sugar factory, Agrana has two sites that together cover the entire domestic beet sugar production. In the past processing period, the company focused on the Tulln facility, as the Marchfeld campaign was completed earlier.

Observers expect that cooperation with beet farmers will continue to change. According to its own information, Agrana is examining both expanded irrigation initiatives and adapted cultivation contracts in order to cushion the impact of future drought periods. The AMA multiple applications for the 2025/2026 season form the data basis for the settlement and the regional distribution of harvest volumes.

Outlook for the 2026 season

Overall, the 2025/2026 campaign illustrates, in the company's assessment, how closely sugar production, climatic conditions and contract farming are intertwined in Austria. Spokesperson Simak stressed that, despite the current drought, the industry is focusing on long-term stability and supply security in the long term.

According to Agrana, the situation on the European sugar markets remains an additional factor of uncertainty. Fluctuating world market prices and rising energy and logistics costs pose further challenges for domestic producers, which exist regardless of the weather pattern. Overall, however, supply of the Austrian market remains secure, as Tulln and Leopoldsdorf fulfilled the promised delivery volumes.
