An Ebola outbreak in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo has grown to more than 900 suspected cases and claimed over 200 lives, the World Health Organization confirmed on Sunday.

A Region in Conflict

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced the updated figures as health authorities grapple with the spread of the Bundibugyo variant of the virus, which was first identified in 2007. The mortality rate for this strain is estimated at 30 to 50 percent.

The outbreak is concentrated in the provinces of North Kivu, South Kivu, and Ituri, regions that have endured years of armed conflict. The Congolese army has been fighting the M23 militia, which is backed by Rwanda, and last year the group seized territory in both Kivu provinces while attempting to establish its own administration.
