An Ebola outbreak in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo has now surpassed 900 suspected cases and claimed more than 200 lives, according to the World Health Organization and Congolese government estimates.

The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo variant of the Ebola virus, was first identified in 2007 and carries a mortality rate of approximately 30 to 50 percent. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus confirmed the latest figures on Sunday, underscoring the severity of the epidemic.

The WHO has raised the risk of national spread within the DRC to "very high," while the regional risk is considered "high" and the global risk remains "low." The virus has already reached several regions, including urban centers where hundreds of thousands of people live, facilitating further transmission.
