The World Health Organization has registered more than 900 suspected Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where the outbreak has already claimed over 200 lives, according to Congolese government estimates.

Conflict Zone Complicates Response

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced the updated case count on Sunday, confirming that the Bundibugyo variant of the virus is driving the epidemic. This strain, first identified in 2007, carries a mortality rate of approximately 30 to 50 percent.

The outbreak is concentrated in the eastern provinces of North Kivu, South Kivu, and Ituri, regions already destabilized by years of armed conflict. The Congolese army has been battling the M23 militia, which is supported by Rwanda, and the group has seized territory in both Kivu provinces over the past year while attempting to establish its own administration.
