Patient discharged as cured

A US doctor who was infected with the Bundibugyo type of the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo has been discharged as cured after around two weeks of treatment in the special isolation unit at Berlin's Charité hospital.

The patient was admitted to the Charité on May 20, after being brought to Berlin from Uganda in a special aircraft and transported to the clinic under high security measures. A PCR test confirmed the infection with the rare Bundibugyo virus, a type of Ebola virus for which there has so far been neither an approved vaccine nor a specific therapy.

Initially, the patient was significantly weakened and showed typical Ebola symptoms as well as a high viral load, the clinic announced. Under a combined antiviral therapy and supportive medical measures, the symptoms of illness receded significantly in the first week. The condition continuously improved, and laboratory values normalized.
