Frankfurt am Main, July 13, 2026

A second US citizen who contracted the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo landed at Frankfurt Airport during the night to Monday and was brought to the city's university hospital for treatment.

The person tested positive for the Bundibugyo variant of the virus currently spreading there. A spokesperson for the Federal Ministry of Health confirmed the arrival to the German Press Agency. It initially remained unclear whether the person is a man or a woman.

The US health authority CDC had previously announced that a US citizen was affected who worked for a humanitarian organization in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This is therefore the second American to be transferred to Germany due to an Ebola infection.

The first American patient had arrived in Germany on May 20 and was admitted to the Berlin Charité. According to medical reports, his condition had been life-threatening at times, particularly between his departure from Africa and his arrival in Germany. After just over two weeks of treatment, he was eventually discharged from the hospital.
