Ebola Patient in Frankfurt: Condition Stable, Symptoms Improving

Origin of the Infection

The patient arrived at Frankfurt Airport late at night heading into Monday and was brought to Germany for treatment. Frankfurt University Hospital has a special isolation unit for highly contagious diseases and is prepared to care for such patients.

According to the hospital, the patient is benefiting from the therapy measures that have been initiated. „Er profitiere von Therapiemaßnahmen, heißt es." The supportive therapy is aimed at stabilizing the body's own defenses and monitoring vital functions.

Background on the Ebola Virus

Ebola is one of the most dangerous viral infectious diseases. The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies the virus as a pathogen with a high mortality rate. It is usually transmitted through direct contact with bodily fluids of infected humans or animals.

The current case in Frankfurt is part of a series of transfers of Ebola-infected patients to Germany. Approximately two months earlier, a first US American patient with Ebola had been brought to Germany for treatment. Now a second US American with the infection arrived in Frankfurt – according to the hospital, nearly two months after the first case.

Experience of the Hospital

The specialists at Frankfurt University Hospital emphasize that the clinic has many years of experience in treating patients with life-threatening viral infections. Protective measures for staff and strict isolation protocols are standard, it was said.

Among the broader public, the case had at times triggered concern. However, the hospital and the responsible health authorities had repeatedly pointed out that the chain of infection outside Africa was limited and that the established protective precautions would practically rule out transmission in Germany.

Several days had passed before the beginning of treatment in Frankfurt, during which the patient had been under medical observation. Transport to Germany was carried out under special safety precautions using an aircraft equipped for the purpose.

With the now-reported improvement in symptoms, a positive development in the course of the illness is emerging. A hospital spokesperson said: „Die betroffene Person weist derzeit eine Symptombesserung auf und profitiert von den unterstützenden Therapiemaßnahmen". The treating physicians continue to monitor the patient's condition closely.

Outlook on the Treatment

The Ebola virus occurs primarily in sub-Saharan Africa. The Bundibugyo virus infection being treated in Frankfurt, one of the six known Ebola species, is associated with a high but variable mortality rate according to WHO data.

According to Frankfurt University Hospital, the further treatment of the patient will be continued. When a possible discharge or an end to the isolation measures could be expected remained open at the time of the announcement.
