The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned of a 'catastrophic collision of disease and conflict' as the number of suspected Ebola cases in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has climbed to more than 900.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus issued the stark warning in a statement on X, formerly Twitter, following a visit to Ituri province, the center of the current outbreak. He stressed that the organization can neither gain the population's trust nor isolate the sick while bombs are falling.

Tedros appealed directly to the warring parties in the provincial capital of Bunia to agree on an immediate ceasefire, even a short one, to allow health workers to contain the spread of the virus. 'We cannot help as long as helpers must fear for their safety and their lives,' he said.
