Bunia, 30 May 2026
The World Health Organization warned of a catastrophic collision of disease and conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo as the number of suspected Ebola cases climbed past 900.
Ceasefire Plea Amid Fighting
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus published a statement on X on the day of the report, appealing to warring parties to agree on an immediate ceasefire so that the outbreak can be contained. "We can neither gain the trust of the population nor isolate the sick while bombs are falling," he wrote.
Tedros visited Ituri province, the center of the current Ebola outbreak, and arrived in the provincial capital Bunia. He called on conflicting parties to lay down arms at least temporarily. "We cannot help as long as helpers must fear for their safety and their lives," he stated in a WHO-published letter.
The current outbreak is caused by the rare Bundibugyo variant of the Ebola virus. There is no approved vaccine and no specific treatment for this strain. According to WHO, the spread can currently only be stopped through consistent isolation of infected persons and their contacts.
