Suspected Ebola cases in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo have climbed past 900 as the World Health Organization urgently calls for an immediate ceasefire to prevent a catastrophic collision of disease and war.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus issued the appeal during a visit to Ituri province, the center of the current outbreak. Arriving in the provincial capital Bunia, he called on conflicting parties to lay down their weapons at least temporarily.
"We can neither gain the trust of the population nor isolate the sick while bombs are falling," Tedros wrote in a statement posted on X. "We urgently ask that the survival of people be placed above all else."
