The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned of a 'catastrophic collision of disease and conflict' as the number of suspected Ebola cases in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) surpasses 900.

A Deadly Intersection of War and Disease

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus published a stark statement on X, emphasizing that the organization can neither gain the population's trust nor isolate the sick while bombs are falling. He appealed to the warring parties to agree on an immediate ceasefire so that the Ebola outbreak can be contained.

The current outbreak is caused by the rare Bundibugyo variant of the Ebola virus, for which there is currently no approved vaccine and no specific treatment. According to the WHO, the infection chain can only be interrupted if infected persons are treated under the highest safety standards and their contacts isolate for three weeks.
