Suspected Ebola cases in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo have climbed to over 900 as the World Health Organization warns that ongoing violence is creating a catastrophic collision of disease and conflict.

A Call for Ceasefire

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus issued an urgent appeal for warring parties to agree on an immediate ceasefire so that the outbreak can be contained. "We can neither gain the trust of the population nor isolate the sick while bombs are falling," he wrote in a statement.

The current outbreak is caused by the rare Bundibugyo variant of the Ebola virus, for which there is no approved vaccine and no specific treatment. According to the WHO, the infection chain can only be interrupted if infected persons are treated under the highest safety standards and their contacts isolate for three weeks.
