The World Health Organization warned on Monday that the Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo has surpassed 900 suspected cases, as armed conflict and mass displacement cripple efforts to contain the rare Bundibugyo virus variant.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, visiting the outbreak's epicenter in Ituri province, issued an urgent appeal for warring parties to agree on an immediate ceasefire. "We cannot help as long as helpers must fear for their safety and their lives," Tedros said upon arriving in the provincial capital Bunia.
The WHO chief described the situation as a "catastrophic collision of disease and conflict." In a statement published on the online service X, he wrote that the WHO can "neither gain the population's trust nor isolate the sick while bombs are falling."
