The World Health Organization has warned of a catastrophic collision of disease and conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, where suspected Ebola cases have climbed past 900 and fighting continues to displace tens of thousands of people.

A Virus Without a Vaccine

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus issued an urgent appeal for an immediate ceasefire during a visit to Ituri province, the center of the current outbreak. "We can neither gain the trust of the population nor isolate the sick while bombs are falling," Tedros wrote in a statement.

The outbreak is driven by the rare Bundibugyo variant of the Ebola virus, for which there is no approved vaccine and no specific treatment. According to the WHO, the infection chain can only be broken if infected individuals are treated under the highest safety standards and their contacts isolate for at least three weeks.
