The World Health Organization has reported that the number of suspected Ebola cases in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo has surpassed 900, as ongoing armed conflict and mass displacement critically undermine efforts to contain the outbreak.
A Deadly Collision of Disease and War
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus issued an urgent appeal for an immediate ceasefire in the affected region, warning of a catastrophic collision of disease and conflict. "We can neither gain the trust of the population nor isolate the sick while bombs are falling," he wrote in a statement.
The current outbreak is caused by the rare Bundibugyo variant of the Ebola virus, for which there is no approved vaccine and no specific treatment. According to the WHO, the infection chain can only be interrupted if infected persons are treated under the highest safety standards and their contacts isolate for three weeks.
