Kals am Großglockner, 01 August 2026

An 82-year-old broke through a crevasse on a glacier on the Großglockner during a hike on Friday and fell around four meters deep.

The incident occurred in the area around the Stüdl Hut and the Ködnitzkees, a high-alpine glacier region on the side of the municipality of Kals. According to information available so far, the man was on the mountain together with other mountaineers when the snow and firn cover over a crevasse suddenly gave way and he slid into the depths.

The fall from a height of about four meters ended on a lower ledge inside the crevasse. Companions immediately raised the alarm and placed an emergency call via the Kals mountain rescue service. Alpine Police and mountain rescue teams were dispatched to the accident site with rope equipment and rescue gear.
