The European Union will not appoint a special representative for Russia at this time, diplomatic sources confirmed on Thursday, as the war in Ukraine continues to dominate the bloc's eastern policy.
The decision to postpone the appointment reflects deep divisions among member states over how to handle relations with Moscow while the conflict persists. Several EU countries argued that naming an envoy now could send the wrong signal, suggesting a readiness to return to business as usual despite ongoing Russian military operations.
The role of an EU special envoy for Russia has been vacant for months. Proponents of filling the position say it is necessary to maintain a channel of communication, but opponents fear it could be exploited by the Kremlin for propaganda purposes.
