In the EU Rule of Law Report 2026 published in Brussels on Friday, the EU Commission once again criticizes Austria's lack of progress in monitoring lobbying activities and political influence on judicial appointments.

The EU Commission notes in the report that in Austria "no steps have been taken to improve the monitoring of lobbying activities." At the same time, Brussels continues to see shortcomings regarding political influence on the appointment of judges and considers the independence of the judiciary to be at risk. There are "persistent concerns," the report states, and Austria "is therefore recommended to intensify its efforts" and "take European standards into account."
