Fatal mountain accident at the Hohe Wand: 68-year-old alpinist swept away by boulder

The Hohe Wand is regarded by mountaineers as a challenging and popular touring destination in the Southern Alps. The area lies in the border region between South Tyrol and the Austrian Zillertal. Several factors, such as weather conditions, rock composition, and the steepness of the terrain, can increase the risk of rockfall.

The authorities have not yet conclusively published the exact circumstances of the incident. According to information available as of the day of the accident, the woman was struck by a dislodging boulder and dragged over the precipice.

South Tyrolean rescue workers described it as a tragic mountain accident. The incident is part of a series of alpine accidents in the region. Just a few days earlier, in the neighbouring Zillertal in Tyrol, a 79-year-old hiker had been out with his seven-year-old grandson when the grandfather, walking ahead, fell down a slope of roughly 40 to 45 degrees.

The rescue chain in the Alpine region is closely interlinked between mountain rescue, the alpine police, and rescue helicopters. In incidents in hard-to-reach terrain, specially equipped teams are often deployed who recover the injured by rope or helicopter.
