According to the Federal Digital Ministry, every second household in Germany now has access to a fiber optic connection, as Digital Minister Karsten Wildberger (CDU) announced in Berlin on Thursday.
The Federal Digital Ministry stated that by the end of 2025, almost 50 percent of households in Germany had a fiber optic connection to the building or apartment, or could have had one installed on short notice. This means that coverage increased by six percentage points within half a year. The figures are based on the ministry's evaluations.
Despite the growing availability, many households have not yet signed a fiber optic contract. According to the industry association VATM, only about one in four households uses such a connection, even if the line has already been laid to the house. The remaining households continue to use DSL via telephone lines or cable internet.
