Rio de Janeiro, 30 July 2026
Five people have died in Brazil as powerful winds with gusts of up to 100 kilometers per hour caused chaos on Tuesday in Rio de Janeiro and parts of the state of São Paulo.
The storm uprooted dozens of trees, damaged power lines, and largely halted buses, subway services, and air traffic at the domestic Santos Dumont Airport in Rio de Janeiro. Thousands of commuters were stranded on their way to work or home, numerous streets were closed, and a state of emergency was declared in several districts.
