Heidelberg, July 15, 2026
Five years after the flood disaster in Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia, which killed at least 185 people, a broad majority of 81 percent of the German homeowners surveyed are in favor of mandatory flood insurance, according to a survey by the comparison portal Verivox.
Flood protection for residential buildings, the so-called natural hazards insurance, has so far been voluntary in Germany and is offered as an add-on to residential building insurance. In light of the experiences of July 2021, however, the political and societal pressure to introduce a mandate is growing. According to the survey of 1,054 homeowners, 81 percent consider mandatory coverage against flooding to be sensible.
