A forest and moorland fire near Lake Chiemsee completely closed the A8 motorway between Übersee and Bernau in both directions on Monday morning; around 200 emergency personnel have been battling the flames since late Sunday evening.
In the area of the Upper Bavarian municipality of Übersee, not far from Lake Chiemsee, a forest and moorland fire broke out late on Sunday evening. According to the fire department, 5.5 hectares of forest and moorland are ablaze, equivalent to an area of just under eight football pitches. The cause of the fire was initially unclear.
Since late Sunday evening, around 200 firefighters have been trying to contain the flames. During the firefighting operations, one firefighter was slightly injured; according to current knowledge, no one else was hurt. On Monday morning, a police helicopter was additionally expected to assist with the firefighting efforts and drop water over the burning area.
