A forest fire of exceptional scale in the Pyrénées-Orientales led on Sunday evening to the evacuation of around 5,000 people from several localities west of Perpignan and has already destroyed 1,650 hectares of land.

The prefecture of the Pyrénées-Orientales department ordered the evacuation on Sunday evening as the flames continued to spread across a mountain range west of Perpignan. Several small localities in the mountainous region near the Spanish border were affected. According to broadcaster BFMTV, a resident and a firefighter were seriously injured during the firefighting operations.

Operations under extreme conditions

Prefect Regnault de la Mothe spoke of a forest fire of exceptional scale. „Der Waldbrand von außergewöhnlichem Ausmaß, der derzeit in den Pyrénées-Orientales wütet, erfordert einen massiven Einsatz der Mittel zur Waldbrandbekämpfung unserer Feuerwehr, aber auch der inneren Sicherheitskräfte und aller staatlichen Stellen“, he declared. He also described the protection of the population as the top priority: „Die absolute und ganz klare Priorität ist natürlich der Schutz der Bevölkerung, des Eigentums und der Naturräume sowie die Eindämmung des Brandes.“
