Fürth, 27 May 2026
SpVgg Greuther Fürth secured their 2. Bundesliga status with a 2-0 home victory over Rot-Weiss Essen on Tuesday, winning the relegation playoff 2-1 on aggregate.
Three days after a 0-1 defeat in Essen, goals from Noel Futkeu in the 29th minute and Branimir Hrgota shortly after the restart in the 47th minute turned the tie in Fürth's favor. The result means Fürth, who have played at least second-division football since the 1997/98 season, avoided what local media described as a 'super-GAU' of relegation to the third tier.
For Rot-Weiss Essen, the defeat brought a painful end to their promotion campaign. The club from North Rhine-Westphalia had carried a narrow advantage into the match after their 1-0 win at the Hafenstraße, but were unable to hold off a determined Fürth side.
