The order backlog of German industry rose in June to its highest level since the start of data collection more than ten years ago, according to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), signalling high capacity utilisation in domestic production.

The order books of German industry are fuller than at any time since 2015, according to Destatis. In June, the order backlog reached its highest level since the statistical series began more than a decade ago. The agency interprets this as a sign of sustained strong demand for industrial products "Made in Germany".

Strained Framework Conditions Temper Confidence

At the same time, the overall economic situation remains strained. Destatis explicitly pointed to the burdens posed by high oil prices and the uncertain conditions on international sales markets. "Laut Statistischem Bundesamt hat der Auftragsbestand im Juni den höchsten Wert seit Beginn der Erhebung vor mehr als zehn Jahren erreicht", the statement said. The economic risks, for example from rising energy costs and geopolitical tensions, therefore remain.
