At the opening of the Nationalrat following the summer recess, Leonore Gewessler accused the federal government on Tuesday of inaction on climate protection and pointed to rising emissions as well as heat-related deaths during the past summer.
The Allegations in Detail
Speaking in the plenary of the Nationalrat, Gewessler described a summer that had been "nimmer normal" ("never normal") and recalled the record temperatures of recent months. She referred to hundreds of heat-related deaths recorded in the statistics: "Menschen, für die die extreme Hitze zu extrem war" ("People for whom the extreme heat was too extreme").
At the same time, she sharply criticized the political course of the coalition. Its climate policy essentially consisted of waiting, Gewessler said in the direction of the federal government: "Die Politik der Bundesregierung besteht aus Hoffen auf den Herbst" ("The federal government's policy consists of hoping for autumn").
