Sanaa, July 13, 2026

Heavy airstrikes hit the airport of the Yemeni capital Sanaa on Monday; the internationally recognized government of Yemen claimed responsibility for the attacks, justifying them with the refusal to allow an Iranian aircraft to land.

According to the internationally recognized government in Aden, the shelling in the early afternoon deliberately targeted the runway of the airport in the capital controlled by the Houthis. Sanaa, which the Houthis had already seized in 2014, had repeatedly been the target of massive airstrikes in recent years, without Saudi Arabia succeeding in driving the militia out of the capital. Video footage from the city showed clouds of smoke over the airport area after the attack.

The Houthi militia rejected the government's account and instead accused Saudi Arabia of having carried out the attacks. Its spokesman Yahya Saree announced retaliation: "By God," Saree thundered. "This is an unjust and blatant act of aggression." The enemy will pay for it. "This will not go unanswered." The militia also declared that its delegation had been on its way back from the mourning ceremonies for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, whom the facts identify as the supreme leader of Iran.
