Heavy rain and thunderstorms trigger around 70 fire service operations in Tyrol's Kufstein district

Hikers rescued from gorge

Several roads were closed during the height of the storm. The L27 was shut in both directions, and the Hahntennjochstraße — a mountain pass road linking the upper Inn valley with the Außerfern — was also impassable for a period. Debris, mud and standing water were cited as reasons for the closures. Authorities urged drivers to avoid non-essential travel until the water receded and clearance teams had inspected the routes.

Road closures across the district

In Breitenbach am Inn, a stream (Bach) overran its banks and inundated the surrounding land, prompting evacuations of ground-floor rooms in some properties. Firefighters used pumps and sandbags to redirect the flow. Similar, smaller-scale flooding was reported in neighbouring villages.

Hailstones of notable size were observed in parts of the district. Growers in affected areas said fruit and vegetable plots had been damaged, though a full assessment of agricultural losses was not yet available. Insurers were expected to begin processing claims in the following days.

Hail and agricultural damage

The neighbouring Bezirk Reutte also felt the effects of the same weather system, though reporting from that district was more limited. Mountain runoff typically continues for hours after a cloudburst, and hydrologists warned that streams could remain elevated into the night.

Emergency services remained on standby after 19:30 as further rain showers were forecast for the region overnight. The Bezirksfeuerwehrverband Kufstein said additional units from neighbouring districts had been placed on alert in case reinforcements were needed. Residents were advised to keep clear of flooded basements, swollen streams and undercut riverbanks.

Overnight outlook and response

A clearer picture of the total damage is expected once municipal authorities and the state of Tirol complete their damage surveys. Insurance industry representatives noted that hail and flooding claims from short, intense storms had risen in recent years across the Alps, partly attributed to warmer summer temperatures.

By late evening, water levels on the main rivers in the Unterland were reported to be falling, though several side streams were still running high. The fire services said they would continue to monitor gauge stations and respond to any further callouts through the night.
