Following heavy rainfall, three mudslides hit the Kaunertal Glacier Road in Tyrol on Sunday, prompting the evacuation of around 200 day-trippers by helicopters of the Austrian Armed Forces from the valley near the Italian border.

Situation in the Valley

Heavy rainfall triggered three mudslides in the Tyrolean Kaunertal on Sunday, which came down onto the Kaunertal Glacier Road. Debris and mud completely blocked the road, as the authorities of the state of Tyrol announced: „Die Straße wurde von Geröll und Schlamm blockiert, wie die Behörden des Bundeslandes Tirol mitteilten." No one was injured by the mudslides, it was further stated: „Durch die Muren sei aber niemand verletzt worden."

Around 200 people who had come to the Kaunertal for day trips were no longer able to leave the area near the Italian border. They had to spend the night in a mountain shelter and a mountain restaurant, according to a statement. Around ten people had already been airlifted out on Sunday for medical reasons, said Elmar Rizzoli from the Tyrolean Crisis Center: „Rund zehn Personen seien bereits am Sonntag aus medizinischen Gründen ausgeflogen worden, sagte Elmar Rizzoli vom Tiroler Krisenzentrum."
