Multiple mudslides in Tyrol after severe thunderstorms

According to police, one person was initially trapped by a mudslide. The available reports did not mention any injuries. Rescue teams were deployed to free the affected person and secure the situation.

The severe weather also affected the Kitzbühel district. In several locations, roads were covered with debris and partly impassable. Fire brigades and road maintenance crews were dispatched to clear the roadways and restore safety for traffic.

There were also minor landslides and flooded sections around Innsbruck following the thunderstorms. The situation was described by police as serious but manageable. No injuries were initially reported.

Authorities urged road users to give wide berth to closed-off areas and to follow the instructions of emergency personnel. Cleanup work continued late into the evening, with no end to the closures initially in sight.

The weather service had issued a severe weather warning for parts of Tyrol in the evening. Heavy rain and thunderstorms had softened the ground in the mountain valleys, contributing to the slides.

For the night and the following day, emergency services expected further follow-up work. It was initially unclear when the affected roads could be fully reopened.

Cleanup operations and warnings

Police reported that the situation in Brandberg near Zillergrund 60, extending inward toward Häusling, had been particularly precarious due to the renewed mudslide. The road had been blocked over a stretch requiring the use of heavy equipment.

Residents and guests in the affected valleys were asked to leave buildings for the time being and to avoid slope areas. In some parts of town, electricity was preemptively shut off to prevent hazards from damaged lines.

The evening of 6 August 2026 thus brought the most severe storm damage of the summer so far to the Zillertal and parts of the Kitzbühel district. Incident commanders emphasized that the coming hours would be decisive in limiting damage and restoring infrastructure.
