Breakdown near Helgoland
According to the Water Protection Police (Wasserschutzpolizei) and the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (Deutsche Gesellschaft zur Rettung Schiffbrüchiger, DGzRS), the engine of the 68-metre-long ferry failed at noon on Saturday while the vessel was en route from Büsum to Helgoland. The "Funny Girl" then drifted powerless in the water for almost two hours, a few nautical miles off the North Sea island (Pinneberg district).
The distress call was received by the DGzRS at 12:45. The emergency rescue cruiser "Hermann Marwede" then set out toward the disabled vessel in order to initially tow the ferry to Helgoland. However, as a police spokesperson explained, docking at the island was not possible, so the ship along with all passengers was taken to Cuxhaven in Lower Saxony. „Da nach Angaben der Polizeisprecherin dort ein Anlegen jedoch nicht möglich war, werde die „Funny Girl" mitsamt aller Passagiere nun ins niedersächsische Cuxhaven gebracht."
