Rescue teams in Laos are racing against time to save a group of gold miners trapped in a cave in Xaisomboun province since heavy monsoon rains flooded the entrance on May 19.
The group was exploring the cave system near Longchaeng when torrential downpours caused water levels to rise rapidly, blocking their exit. Local officials confirmed that contact with the miners has been intermittent, and their exact condition remains unknown.
The incident has drawn comparisons to the 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue in northern Thailand, where a youth football team and their coach were trapped for 18 days. That operation involved thousands of rescuers from around the world and captivated global attention.
Echoes of Tham Luang
Laos authorities have requested international assistance, and specialist cave divers and rescue personnel have begun arriving in the country. The challenging terrain and ongoing rain are complicating efforts to pump water out of the cave system.
