A group of gold prospectors has been trapped inside a flooded cave in Laos' Xaisomboun province since May 19, prompting a complex international rescue operation.

The group became stranded after heavy monsoon rains inundated the cave system near Longchaeng, a remote area in the mountainous province. The exact number of people trapped remains unconfirmed by authorities.

Local rescue teams were the first to respond, but the rising water levels and narrow, submerged passages quickly overwhelmed their initial efforts. The challenging conditions forced officials to seek external assistance.

International cave-diving specialists have now joined the mission, bringing equipment and expertise to navigate the treacherous, flooded tunnels. The operation is being coordinated from the capital, Vientiane.
