A group of gold miners remains trapped in a flooded cave in Laos' Xaisomboun province since May 19, as international rescue teams join a desperate mission to save them.

The miners were searching for gold in a cave near Longchaeng when torrential monsoon rains caused water levels to rise rapidly, blocking their exit. Local authorities confirmed the group has been unable to communicate with the surface since the flooding began.

The incident has drawn immediate parallels to the 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue in northern Thailand, where a youth football team and their coach were trapped for 18 days. That operation involved thousands of rescuers from around the world and captivated a global audience.

Echoes of Tham Luang

Laos' government has officially requested international assistance. Specialists with experience in cave diving and flood rescue have begun arriving in the capital, Vientiane, before being transported to the remote mountainous site.
