Sanaa, July 18, 2026

The Iran-allied Yemeni Houthi militia has warned neighboring Saudi Arabia against a "siege" and announced retaliation for an airstrike on the airport in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa.

The militia is considered one of Iran's most important non-state allies. On Thursday, the leader of the militia, Abdel Malik al-Houthi, threatened Saudi Arabia with attacks on oil facilities and airports, among others, as reported by the Yemeni news agency SABA. The militia was ready to apply the principle of "siege for siege, airport for airport, and port for port," the Yemeni news agency SABA today quoted the militia's defense minister, Mohammed al-Atafi, as saying.

The new tensions were triggered by an airstrike earlier this week on the capital's Sanaa airport, for which the militia blamed Saudi Arabia. The defense ministry of the internationally recognized government in Yemen, which is backed by Saudi Arabia, had claimed responsibility for the attacks. The aim was to prevent an Iranian plane from landing on Yemeni soil. Saudi Arabia subsequently intercepted a rocket attack, according to its own statements. The Houthis announced retaliation.
