Budapest, 06 June 2026

The Hungarian government led by Prime Minister Peter Magyar has published a decree with immediate effect that halts the issuance of new residence permits for workers from non-EU countries under the previous government's existing programme.

Decree published in the official gazette

The decree was published overnight in the Hungarian Official Gazette and took effect immediately. The regulation explicitly targets the simplified procedure of the previous government, through which guest workers from the Philippines, Ukraine, China, Vietnam and India in particular have been brought to Hungary in recent years. As the official text states, "ab sofort würden neue Aufenthaltsgenehmigungen aus dem Programm der Regierung von Vorgänger Orban nicht mehr erteilt".
