Mexico has announced criminal complaints and civil lawsuits in the United States following the deaths of a total of 17 Mexican citizens in connection with operations by the US immigration agency ICE.
The Mexican government would proceed not only diplomatically but also legally against those responsible, on the instructions of President Claudia Sheinbaum, Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco said Thursday in Mexico City. Criminal complaints were planned with the prosecutors' offices of the affected US states as well as with the US Department of Justice. In addition, Mexico intended to file civil lawsuits against private operators of ICE detention centers.
Velasco spoke of a painful tragedy and called for a comprehensive investigation. "This incident must be investigated with the utmost seriousness," he said. According to the foreign minister, a total of 17 Mexican migrants have died in connection with ICE operations or in ICE detention facilities since the start of the current wave of deportations.
