Venezuelan interim president Delcy Rodríguez has released 346 million US dollars from the country's funds at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for reconstruction and to support affected families, following the devastating double earthquake of June 24.

Scale of the Disaster

Rodríguez announced the release of funds via the messaging service Telegram. According to this, the money from Venezuela's holdings at the IMF is to be used for reconstruction and to support affected families. Rodríguez thanked IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva for her support as well as all institutions that had made this step possible.

On June 24, two earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 struck the South American country within a matter of seconds. According to official figures, the number of confirmed fatalities now exceeds 5,000. Some 16,740 people were reported injured. Nearly 18,000 people are said to have lost their homes in the disaster. United Nations estimates suggest the number of missing persons could reach as high as 50,000.
