Frankfurt, July 10, 2026

In the accident of a Lufthansa Boeing 787-9 at a parking position in front of Terminal 1 of Frankfurt Airport on June 4, 23 people were injured; according to the German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation (BFU), a locking pin on the nose gear had not been inserted into the designated bore.

Background of the incident

The aircraft, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, had been prepared for the long-haul flight LH450 to Los Angeles when the nose landing gear unexpectedly retracted and the aircraft struck the concrete surface with its nose and both engine cowlings. As the BFU in Braunschweig explained in its interim report, the technical device intended to secure the landing gear during ground operations was not located in the designated bore at the time of the incident, but rather in a storage box in the forward cargo hold. It stated verbatim: „Die technische Vorrichtung habe sich nicht in der vorgesehenen Bohrung befunden, sondern in einer Aufbewahrungskiste im vorderen Frachtraum."
