The Iranian leadership has suspended the framework agreement concluded with the US after US attacks on Iranian territory caused, according to Iranian figures, at least 50 deaths and more than 500 injuries.

Breach of a painstakingly negotiated process

The suspension of the framework agreement marks a deep rupture in the already strained relations between Tehran and Washington. The agreement had stipulated that a final deal was to be negotiated within 60 days. With the current decision, this negotiation process is being interrupted indefinitely.

The Iranian side reacted with sharp rhetoric. In a statement by Supreme Leader Khamenei, it was said that the "American enemy" was bent on "warmongering"; it would be taught "unforgettable lessons." The wording underscores how far the diplomatic channels are currently regarded as damaged from Tehran's perspective.
