Iran suspends framework agreement with US – escalation following attacks

Sharp tones from Tehran

In parallel, regional reactions intensified. The Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council, Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, described Iran's actions as an "extremely dangerous escalation" and as a "serious violation of international law and the United Nations Charter." He spoke of war crimes that required "international accountability and criminal prosecution."

The situation in the region remains tense beyond the direct parties to the conflict. Pakistan's Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, emphasized in a phone call with his Kuwaiti counterpart the "urgent need to de-escalate." Neighboring states are thereby signaling that they too want to prevent any further escalation.

Regional mediation efforts

International mediators are trying to keep the dialogue open. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, both sides stressed in a contact "how important an immediate cessation of hostilities and a swift resumption of the negotiation process were." Moscow is thereby acting as a mediator, without any concrete negotiation progress being announced.

On the ground, the consequences of the US attacks are already visible. The spokesman of the Iranian Health Ministry, Hossein Kermanpour, posted on the online platform X that more than 500 people had been injured. The figures cannot currently be independently verified, but point to a severe humanitarian burden.

Human costs and military situation

Security concerns around the Strait of Hormuz are gaining additional weight through the escalation. The strait is one of the most important routes for global oil transport; any disruption could have far-reaching economic consequences. Jordan, Kuwait, and Bahrain – which cooperate closely with the US in the region – are also watching the developments with concern.

The coming days will show whether the mediation efforts of Russia and other actors take hold or whether the confrontation escalates further. A return to the negotiating table currently appears unlikely as long as both sides do not publicly retract their mutual accusations.

In Washington, President Donald Trump has so far not commented concretely on the Iranian accusations. Observers interpret the silence as a sign that the US government is reassessing the situation. A direct statement could further sharpen the tone or, alternatively, mark a diplomatic opening.

Outlook: waiting for signals from Washington

The suspension of the framework agreement comes against an already fragile security situation in the Near and Middle East. Regional partners such as Jordan, Kuwait, and Bahrain are directly affected, as an open conflict between Iran and the US would endanger the stability of the entire Gulf.

Should the Iranian leadership stick to its hard line, the economic and political costs for the region are likely to rise. Energy prices, refugee movements, and a possible spread of violence to neighboring states would then be the most likely consequences.

Regardless, it remains to be seen whether the UN Security Council or other multilateral forums will convene in the coming days to discuss the situation. So far, neither the United Nations nor the European Union has published an official position on the suspension of the framework agreement.
