Tel Aviv, July 16, 2026
Israel's parliament on Wednesday approved a controversial media law that paves the way for a new media authority with significantly greater government influence over personnel decisions.
According to the APA news agency, the Knesset passed the law through an accelerated procedure. As APA further reported, "the governing coalition is currently pushing through several controversial measures via accelerated procedure" because parliament is set to dissolve on Friday ahead of the new election planned for October 27, 2026. The shortening of parliamentary deliberation periods had already intensified opposition criticism in recent days.
According to APA, the new law provides for a new media authority "in which the government obtains significantly greater influence over appointments." Until now, the Israeli media sector had been subject to stronger regulation. Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi justified the move with the aim of liberalizing the sector: "According to Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi, the reform is intended to liberalize the previously regulated sector by cutting bureaucracy and to strengthen competition."
