The Knesset voted on Tuesday with 106 out of 120 votes in the first reading for the dissolution of the Israeli parliament, after the dispute over an exemption from military service for ultra-Orthodox men had brought Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition to the brink of collapse.
This clears the way for early general elections, which, according to the applicants' wishes, are to take place between September 8 and October 20. Normally, the next election would have to be held by October 27 at the latest, as the current legislative period ends at that time. However, after the dissolution, the vote could also take place somewhat earlier.
The motion for parliamentary dissolution was introduced by the government under Netanyahu itself. 106 out of 120 lawmakers voted for its adoption in the first reading on Tuesday. This indicates that the coalition is continuing to vote cohesively in the Knesset, despite internal tensions.
