The Israeli parliament (Knesset) passed a legislative amendment on Tuesday that significantly weakens oversight of the government by independent institutions, while Benjamin Netanyahu continues to push forward the controversial judicial reform.
Among other things, the amendment weakens the position of the Attorney General, who has hitherto functioned as an independent guardian of the legality of state action. In the future, the office is to be more closely tied to the political line of the government, as emerges from the draft law, which found a majority in the Knesset on Tuesday.
Gali Baharav-Miara had voiced serious reservations about the move beforehand. She warned that the reform undermines the separation of powers and calls into question the independence of the judiciary. In a statement, she spoke of an unprecedented intrusion into the constitutional order of the country.
