The cabinet of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni approved on Monday evening by decree a temporary cut in the excise tax on diesel of 17 cents per litre, to apply until 6 August.

Decision only for diesel

The cut affects only diesel. No relief is planned for petrol, according to the decree approved by the cabinet on Monday evening. The tobacco tax is also unaffected by the measure.

Finance Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti explained the decision on Monday evening following a cabinet meeting. He justified the measure with the rise in diesel prices as a result of the current tense situation in the Middle East and the extensive closure of the important Strait of Hormuz.
