Heat pumps were the most frequently installed heating type in German residential buildings in 2025 for the first time, overtaking the predominantly fossil-fueled boilers, as an analysis by the German Economic Institute (IW) shows.

For this, the German Economic Institute (IW) evaluated data from the Kopernikus project Ariadne, funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space. As part of the project, 15,000 households have been surveyed annually since 2021. According to this, 1.9 percent of owner-occupied households had a heat pump installed in 2025. This corresponded to the level of 2024.
