A landslide in the western Chinese city of Pengshui, in the directly administered municipality of Chongqing, has killed at least eight people and left 34 others missing, Chinese authorities announced late Friday evening (local time).
According to emergency services, the debris flow struck late Friday evening while 60 residents were being evacuated from the danger zone. Authorities said late in the evening that 34 people remained missing. Rescue operations in the mountainous area near Pengshui were running at full speed.
Scale of the Disaster in Pengshui
According to the official Xinhua news agency, more than 1,100 people were brought to safety from the area around the disaster site. The region lies in the southwest of the directly administered municipality of Chongqing and is characterized by steep rock faces and deep gorges. It was initially unclear why part of the rock face broke loose.
