Chongqing, 18 July 2026

A landslide in the Pengshui region east of the megacity of Chongqing in western China killed at least eight people, with authorities reporting 34 others still missing late Friday evening local time.

The disaster struck in Pengshui, a county-level area in the mountainous terrain east of Chongqing, according to official statements. State media reported that a second rock slide hit while 60 residents were being evacuated from the area, complicating the rescue operation. More than 1,100 people living near the site have since been moved to safety, officials said.

The cause of the partial collapse of the rock face remained unclear as of late Friday. State broadcaster CCTV said more than 800 rescue workers had been sent to the area. The Chinese government said it had allocated the equivalent of about 6.45 million euros in emergency funds to support rescue operations and provide assistance to affected residents.

Second major landslide in a month

The event marks the second major landslide in China within roughly a month. In early July, a landslide in the northwestern province of Gansu, near the city of Longnan, killed 21 people. The two disasters have drawn renewed attention to the risk of mountain slope failures in regions of China where seasonal rainfall and steep terrain combine to create hazardous conditions.
