LASK signs Belgian defensive talent Verhaeghe from RWDM Brussels

Internationally, the new signing brings an unusual dual-national-team experience. In March, Verhaeghe debuted for the Belgium U19 team; he subsequently switched his passport and featured in May for the U23 side of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which has a senior national team with international experience as a World Cup participant.

LASK sees him as a long-term reinforcement for the defense. A club statement said: "Wir freuen uns, mit Manoel Verhaeghe einen modernen Innenverteidiger für uns gewonnen zu haben, der über gute Qualitäten am Ball verfügt und viel Durchsetzungskraft mitbringt." The club added that it intentionally wanted to give the young player time.

Club and coach take a patient approach

The coaching staff framed expectations in similarly measured terms. "Manoel ist ein junger Perspektivspieler, dem wir die nötige Zeit geben werden, um sich bestmöglich in die Mannschaft zu integrieren", the coach was quoted as saying in the club release. The wording suggests the teenager is not being planned as an immediate starter.

The transfer fits into Linz's squad planning for the coming season. At LASK, the upcoming weeks will bring not only preparation for the start of competitive play but also personnel decisions in the defensive department. With the young Belgian, the team gains additional options at the heart of the backline.

Building block in the youth development strategy

After the departures of other young players, Verhaeghe is another building block in the Upper Austrians' youth development strategy. In recent months, the club has already developed and released several players, such as Ismaila Coulibaly, who moved to Belgium. The new center-back, by contrast, is intended to stay in Linz on a long-term basis.

In sporting terms, the 18-year-old brings attributes that are sought after in the modern center-back profile: height, quality on the ball, and assertiveness. His experience as a captain in a second-division side despite his young age is seen as a further indication of a certain leadership quality. Whether he can confirm that in Austria will be shown by the coming season.
